The Principal Theatre Company are delighted to launch their 2008 Educational Programme at a school in Enfield borough.

Thanks to the theatre company's Educational Sponsor, MWG Designs,
some schools are able to have two
free workshops on any of the
Shakespeare plays.

Mark Griffin, proprietor of MWG Designs:

" I am delighted to be the Principal Theatre Company's Educational Sponsor again. I am passionate about the Educational Programme and what it is achieving".

He continued "I was a school governor and see the need to give children the opportunity to enjoy Shakespeare; especially in an inclusive and
interactive way".

"Shakespeare, the Principal Theatre way, is fun and relevant to today's children
and lets them access some very good
brain food. It's a real pleasure being Educational Sponsor to the excellent Principal Theatre Company"

Each of the students taking part in the workshops will be entitled to a voucher enabling them to visit Forty Hall this summer and see the Principal Theatre Company's professional open air production of Shakespeare plays, free of charge, as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.

As part of their Educational Programme this year the Principal Theatre will be running Shakespeare workshops throughout secondary schools, colleges and universities in North London.

The Principal Theatre Company are looking for other local businesses to sponsor their Educational Programme and offer 3 schools of their choice the chance to have two free workshops each + vouchers to see
the plays.

b) Mannequin
c) Pig in the middle
Insults & Niceties
A fun exercise involving all of the students speaking a line of either Shakespearean insult, ie "Thou art a saucy boy" or a Shakespearean nicety, ie "I love thee, therefore go with me"

This is the first taste the students have of speaking Shakespeare aloud. It makes the Bard fun and relevant for the students. We aim to take the fear out of speaking Shakespeare's words.
Act the metaphor
We take themes from the selected play, ie Macbeth - Ambition, Witchcraft, Majesty and Treason.
In groups the students act out a tableaux on each of the themes, but modernising Shakespeare. Putting it into a modern context. They then act out tableaux's on metaphors from the play, ie "The crow makes wing to the rooky wood".
Texting Shakespeare
In groups - the students are handed a speech from the play. Each group hast to summarize their 25 word paragraph. First getting it down to nine words, then 5 words, then the single most important word in their section.

This exercise teaches the students one way in which they can understand a piece of text, to find the meaning of the speech and to grasp the theme of the monologue.
Mini scenes
The students act out mini-scenes from the play. This allows the students to understand the language of the play. Making the language live and relevant. The students get to grips with the major themes of the play.
The session lasts approx. 1½ hours and consists of a maximum of 30 students. Workshops such as these normally cost £150. The Principal Theatre Company charge £80 per workshop.
The Principal Theatre Company's workshops are not only on Shakespeare. We are able to adapt the workshop to any play or even concentrate on devising new writing with the students.
This year the Principal Theatre Company will be launching their 2008 Community Drama Workshops Programme. These workshops are for anyone interested in acting or drama as a hobby. The workshops will consist of all of the above and much more + confidence building, and ending possibly with a small showcase for friends and family.
