The Open University
In 2001 The Principal Theatre Company
won a unique contract with open university to provide Animated Shakespeare
Lectures for their summer school students on AA306 Shakespeare course
in London.
We are delighted to announce that once again the Open University contract
has been extended to 2008
Both artistic directors Paul Gladwin and Sarah Knight have been studying
with the Open University. Sarah Graduated with honours in 2004 gaining
a BA Degree in Literature.
"It has been an extremely worthwhile experience studying with the
Open University, because it keeps you motivated and keeps the brain
working" claims Sarah Knight."
Paul, who graduates this year, says
"Actors can be in and out of work at any one time, so studying
with the OU can allow you to find other interests while you are not
working, but it also provides you with informative materials to use
as actors in future acting jobs."
The Principal Theatre Company was chosen over other theatre Companies
to provide Lectures that would be both entertaining & educational
and meet the following requirements
|
|
..t
1. Focus on one tragedy and one comedy
from Book one of the Course, and for 90 minutes teach and entertain
the 120-150 students.
2. Provide a combination of acting and teaching in which the challenges
and problems of translating Shakespeare from the page to the stage are
expanded.
We wanted to provide an insight into how a director & actors rehearse
and stage a Shakespeare play.
Christopher Geelan, director of The Principal Theatre Company's open
air productions of Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream,
Twelfth Night and Taming of the Shrew devised the Animated Lecture.
We concentrate on Macbeth & A Midsummer Night's Dream, two texts
that the OU students are studying. The Lectures, which take place in
London every summer, are a huge success with the 1,000 students that
take part.
The students are encouraged to visit forty hall or Coram's fields to
see our open-air production of Twelfth Night. Vouchers are handed to
the students giving them money off the price of their theatre tickets.
We are delighted to announce that our OU contract has been extended
to 2008 where we will again be providing
Animated Shakespeare Lectures to the summer school student, on various
Shakespeare plays.
